Cidade da cultura
The City of Culture is presented as the point connecting Galicia to the rest of the world and as a driver to foster innovative cultural projects. Built on the top of Mount Gaiás, one of the hills surrounding Santiago de Compostela, designed by the American architect Peter Eisenman as a “city” that appears to emerge from the ground to rise as an icon of modern Galicia, in dialogue with the centuries-old city of Compostela, a World Heritage site and the destination of the Way to St James.
This new site, destined for creativity and knowledge, houses four cultural institutions:
GAIÁS CENTRE MUSEUM
Its beauty and flexibility render it the perfect space to host large-sized exhibitions, cultural events and performing arts shows. In 2017, we celebrate its 5 years of life as a cultural and artistic centre of the City of Culture.
LIBRARY AND ARCHIVE OF GALICIA.
They preserve the bibliographical and documentary memory of Galicia and act as the head of the public network of libraries and archives.
CENTRE FOR CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP.
It hosts the Galician Agency for Cultural Industries (AGADIC), which promotes businesses in the cultural sector, a space for coworking, a business incubator and the ITC business crowdworking project called ‘Galicia Open Future, Connecting for Good Galicia’ led by Vodafone; and the ‘Centre of Excellence in Business Intelligence’ led by HP.
CENTRE FOR CULTURAL INNOVATION (CINC).
Headquarters for the Foundation for the City of Culture and the Agency for the Technological Modernisation of Galicia (AMTEGA), uniting the technological services of the Galician Administration.
NATURAL SPACES.
The Forest of Galicia, the Literary Garden and Lake Park are the three green spaces on Mount Gaiás. Three sites where to enjoy nature, relax, practice sports and healthy lifestyle habits through its network of paths, and to admire new views over the city of Compostela.
