“Jaguar is the name given to some horses, a dance and a puppet show. In Jaguar we are puppets and in this manipulated theater, we trust each other and each other’s hands: Mandinga d’Soncent. Wolfli, Blaue Reiter, among others, which despite being radically different, are no more than an extension of ourselves. Jaguar is a fragment, a hunting scene, or actually a tormented hunting scene.” Marlene Monteiro Freitas.
Marlene Monteiro Freitas
Jaguar is the latest creation by Marlene Monteiro Freitas, born in Cape Verde, whose works have a threefold common denominator: openness, impurity and intensity. Co-founder of the dance group Compass (Cape Verde) and the production structure P.OR.K (Lisbon), Marlene Monteiro Freitas stands out for her works De marfim e carne – as estátuas também sofrem (2014), Paraíso-colecção privada (2012-13) or (M)imosa (2011) with Trajal Harrell, Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud. In this work, done in collaboration with Andreas Merk, the quality of the movement represents a breath of fresh air in the panorama of European dance, taking a step further in each performance, assuming risks and seducing audiences around the world. Dance that anticipates the world to come: chaotic, hypnotic and fast. A world that forces us to position ourselves and to know how and with whom we want to move.
